Overview of Flemløse biogas plus gas upgrading plant

The biogas and biogas upgrading plant operated by Flemløse Biogas ApS in Denmark, runs on technology Made in Germany. This industrial plant with an adjoining 850 Nm³ EnviThan biogas upgrading plant is a flagship for Denmark’s exemplary climate legislation: by 2030, the country – which has around 2.5 million hectares of agricultural land – plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent (baseline: 1990) and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

The input materials for this flagship plant – solid and wet manure, straw and organic residues, maize and grass silage – are all sourced from the agricultural operations of the plant shareholders, who are also aiming to gradually reduce the proportion of maize silage in the future from its current level of 12 percent.

The plant, equipped with a wet manure supply tank, Kreis Dissolver and PreMix systems, and a 6,000 m³ digester, feeds the biogas converted using the EnviThan membrane technology directly into the local gas grid as ultrapure biomethane. Since 2020, EnviThan membrane technology from Evonik Industries has been powering a performance improvement in separation capacity from an earlier 2,950 to the current 12,500. This has all been made possible by the development of a high-performance polymer. The greater separation capacity means fewer membranes are necessary, which in turn leads to a higher upgrading capacity per container.

Biogas upgrading plant Flemløse

Denmark is one of Europe’s climate pioneers, providing investment grants not only for biogas plants themselves but also for gas upgrading plants, with value chains being kept within the community. Gas upgrading output varies between 400 and 940 Nm³/h, with some even larger plants. On average, plants are fed with up to 200,000 t/year: energy crops make up only 12.5 percent of this total, with the rest being wet/solid manure and other wastes. Thermophilic anaerobic plant operations at 52 °C causes quality variations in the raw gas, however. Yet EnviThan plants can feed into the gas grid directly without any further calorific value adjustments.
